Passing IELTS Examination In Nigeria

The international English Language Testing System (IELTS) was established in the year 1989. It is a standardized test of English Language for non-native English speakers. The test is coordinated by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English. The principal purpose of this test is to examine English language proficiency among non-native speakers. The test is divided into four (4) categories. They are Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Each of these categories is designed to test a given skill as seen. The first three categories of the test is taken as listed above in the same day, while the last category which is speaking is either held  on the same day or seven days before or after the other test.

 

There are two types of IELTS Tests. They are IELTS Academic and General IELTS Training. It is instructive that before you decide to take any of these tests you should have a clear purpose of what you want to use the test for. If your intention for seating for the test is to gain admission in university in any of the countries that use IELTS test then you have to go for IELTS Academic. IELTS Academic test evaluates whether your level of English language proficiency is good enough for you to commence academic study or training in the university. For someone wishing to relocate or migrate to these countries( Canada, UK, USA, Australia or New Zealand), to work or live there, the IELTS test required is the General IELTS Test which evaluates your English language proficiency in social and everyday context.

 

To register for IELSTS in Nigeria you are required to possess any of the following qualifications:

  • Five (5) credits in English and Mathematics
  • First Degree
  • Masters(Added Advantage)
  • PhD(Added Advantage)

 

One of the easiest ways to pass your IELTS test is through practice. Practice they say brings improvement. To make a good grade in IELTS test it is advisable to give yourself to constant practice. You have to familiarize yourself with the different categories of the test, listening, writing Reading and speaking English. Part of your practice should also involve the re-visitation of previous test questions.

 

Another method that helps you pass your IELTS easily is through the use of multiple approach to the learning of English Language. Since the test involves different categories, a comprehensive approach which includes watching good English movies, listening to songs, reading good books etc. would be of great advantage.

 

To get a high band in IELTS you have to attempt all questions in all the categories in the examination. Answering all the questions gives you the chance of getting high band and coming out successful. In attempting to answer all questions, you have to be conscious of the time allotted to each of the category. Except you use your time effectively, you may not be able to cover all the questions.

 

Finally, the use of IELTS mock examination to sharpen your English language proficiency gives you a great edge and positions you for a very high band during the actual examination. The use of mock IELTS gives you the opportunity to get used to the test environment and requirements. It enables you to master the use of time, become conversant with the techniques and tricks embedded in the test and as such putting you in a place to make good jugements.
